Judaism teaches that humanity was created b’tzelem Elohim—in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). To harm another is to dim that image. The Talmud says, “Whoever destroys a single soul is as if he destroyed an entire world.” Respect for life extends beyond violence to preserving dignity and justice.
The Qur’an teaches, “Whoever saves one life, it is as if he had saved all mankind” (Qur’an 5:32). Jesus blessed the peacemakers (Matthew 5:9). Hindu ahimsa and Buddhist compassion uphold non-violence in thought, word, and deed. Indigenous wisdom calls us to walk gently so that all beings may live.
To respect life today means defending the vulnerable and choosing forgiveness over vengeance. Every act of kindness becomes a small resurrection of the world.
